Designing an Interactive Expository Writing Workshop

Welcome back to my weekly blog Today, we will be reflecting on the planning process of my group's Expository Writing Workshop.

During the planning process of our workshop, my group and I saw it as a collaborative and thoughtful approach to teaching the essentials of expository writing. Starting with an icebreaker, will set a relaxed and engaging tone. Having the student teachers explain a range of topics briefly warmed them up for the session and hone their skills in articulation and quick thinking, which are crucial for writing with clarity and precision.

The framework of the workshop, guided by scholarly resources, laid out a clear and comprehensive understanding of expository writing's purpose, which we aim to impart to our attendees. As a team, we focused on not just informing but also on actively engaging students through various activities. We integrated techniques like creating mind maps and "Minute to write" sessions, which we believed were vital in sparking their creativity while maintaining the focus on the factual and structured nature of expository writing.

In the drafting phase, our "Build-Thru Writing" activity was a unique way for us to weave individual contributions into a collective piece, fostering a sense of community learning. Revising became a lively affair with the "Musical Papers" game, ensuring that everyone contributed to refining the pieces with fresh eyes.

Our editing activities, especially "Spot the Error," were instrumental in enhancing the students' attention to detail. And the culmination of the workshop in the form of a "Reading Festival" and gallery walk provided a sense of accomplishment and public recognition for the hard work put in by the students.

We strategically planned the workshop to progress from theory to practice, ensuring that by the end, each student teacher had a tangible and polished piece of expository writing. We believe our collaborative planning paid off, as it not only covered the fundamentals of expository writing but also instilled a sense of enjoyment and shared success in learning.
